Liveable Cities Solutions
Practical, evidence-led work on public space, mobility and food systems for healthier, safer cities and towns.
UPC's Liveable Cities Solutions programme advances evidence-based, inclusive and practical solutions to help build healthier, more resilient and sustainable cities and towns in Tanzania and across Africa. We work at the intersection of urban development, public health, climate resilience, mobility, food systems and community wellbeing, applying evidence to the challenges created by rapid urbanisation and climate change.
Our approach brings together research, policy engagement, community participation and innovative demonstration to support cities that are not only better planned, but also healthier, safer, more inclusive and more responsive to the needs of their residents.
We believe that liveable cities are places where everyone can thrive. They give people of every income, age, gender and ability equitable access to safe and affordable housing, clean water and sanitation, healthy food, clean air, reliable and healthy transport, parks and quality public spaces. They are designed to make walking and cycling safe and convenient, to connect neighbourhoods to essential services and opportunities, and to create spaces where people can interact, participate and enjoy community life.
For women, children, older people, people with disabilities and low-income communities in particular, liveability means having the freedom and opportunity to meet everyday needs safely, affordably and with dignity.
As Tanzania's cities and towns continue to grow, the choices made today will shape the health, livelihoods and quality of life of generations to come. Through Liveable Cities Solutions, UPC works with communities, local governments, researchers, development partners and other stakeholders to turn evidence into action.
By demonstrating solutions that are locally grounded, scalable and responsive to community priorities, we seek to influence urban policies and investments and help create cities where people and the environment can flourish together.
