School Garden Initiative

Many schools in Arusha rely heavily on basic meals of maize and beans. That narrows dietary diversity, with consequences for pupils' health, learning and development.

UPC is piloting school vegetable gardening as a response, supporting three schools to establish and manage productive gardens on their own open space. Alongside the gardens, the initiative builds the capacity of teachers and pupils in food production, healthy diets, environmental stewardship and sustainable urban practice.

Turning school grounds into productive learning environments strengthens local food systems and can reduce what school feeding costs. The pilot is designed to be scalable, giving Arusha a model it can extend to other schools.
