Kijenge Community Park

Arusha's informal settlements have the least public open space and the fewest places where it is safe to spend time. UPC's Community Parks Initiative works with these communities to convert underused land into parks that people can use.

At Kijenge, UPC improved the open space beside Kijenge Market, introducing facilities for recreation, physical activity and social contact in a part of the city where large numbers of people already pass through every day. Residents and local leaders were involved throughout the design, and the community has a continuing role in how the park is managed.

The result adds to a growing network of neighbourhood parks giving Arusha residents access to recreation and active living within walking distance.
