Arusha's residents buy most of their fresh food at local public markets. Yet the city held no reliable account of how many markets there were, where they sat or what condition they were in, which left decisions about market infrastructure resting on assumption.
UPC surveyed the city's local public markets, recording their location, scale, facilities and physical condition, and set that against how traders and shoppers actually use them. The evidence has since been published twice: as a summary report for Arusha's decision-makers, and as a paper on what market infrastructure means for urban food systems in small African cities.
