About this project

In partnership with the HealthBridge Foundation of Canada, UPC set out to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility around Arusha's local food markets, which most shoppers reach on foot.

The work supported the reintroduction of zebra crossings on three high-use roads, Samunge, Sokoine and Mtei, each selected from our own evidence on pedestrian movement and safety risk. That evidence showed heavy reliance on these routes, particularly among women, older people and others with no real alternative to walking.

The intervention shows what evidence-based planning delivers when it reaches the street, and what partnership and donor support make possible. It also identified where to invest next: continuous sidewalks and accessible crossings that would carry pedestrian safety beyond these three roads.
