Revitalising Play in Primary and Secondary Schools

UPC works to widen equitable access to quality open space for people living in informal settlements, particularly children and other underserved groups. Our field assessments in Arusha found that many primary and secondary schools have very little space where children can play, move and be physically active.

With funding from the HealthBridge Foundation of Canada, UPC is working with city and education authorities to revitalise school open spaces, creating safer, more inclusive and child-friendly environments where children can learn through play.

The approach is the one we take across our work: identify the problem through field research, then co-design the response with the communities and authorities who will live with it. It is also readily scalable, and partners can extend it to other schools across Arusha's underserved communities.
